Kumpiyansa ang kampo ni dating House Speaker at Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez na malakas ang kaso nito laban sa may-ari ng PGMN na si Franco Mabanta.
Sinabi pa ni Atty. Elaine A. Atienza, abogado ni Romualdez na bagama’t hindi niya matatalakay sa media ang ukol sa naganap na pagbasa ng sakdal kay Mabanta ay tiwala ito sa mga hawak na ebidensya.
“But what we can say right now is that we are confident in the strength of our case and our evidence and the court is the proper forum where we can test this evidence.”
Hindi rin binanggit ni Atty. Atienza kung kung nag-plead ng guilty o hindi si Mabanta at iba pang akusado.
“I cannot speak about what happened to the case. I’m really sorry kasi I cannot… Sorry. Pasensya na. I really can’t speak about the case kasi we are under strict orders not to talk about it. Thank you so much. Thank you so much,” ayon kay Atienza.
Hindi rin tinukoy ng abogado kung anu-anong ebidensya ang hawak nila ngayon laban sa PGMN.
“Okay, so sa ngayon we cannot speak of the details of the case, along with the other evidence kasi it’s already subject of ongoing proceedings.”
“But what we can say right now is that we are confident in the strength of our case and our evidence, and the court is the proper forum where we can test this evidence,” dagdag pa nito.
Nang tanungin kung nasaan si Romualdez ay sinabi ni Atienza na bagama’t hindi siya nakadalo sa arraignment ng akusado ay sigurado aniyang dadalo ito sa mga susunod na pagdinig kung kinakailangan.
“Ah si Speaker hindi siya nakadalo ngayon dito sa hearing but he’s duly represented by counsel. If magkaroon, or if ma-require ‘yung kanyang presence or participation in the case whether by the court or under the rules, he will comply.”
Nang kwestyunin ukol sa usaping nababalewala ang press freeedom, sinabi ni Atienza na, “that one I can address. We have said before this is not about press freedom. In fact we encourage people if they have anything against any person, they can report that to the authorities. But we should always follow the process.”
Nang tanungin hinggil sa mga kumakalat sa internet na bumatikos sa isinampang kaso, sinabi ni Atienza na hindi makikipagsabayan ang kanilang kampo sa mga espekulasyon sa social media.
“We respect the court process and we trust that the court will view this matter fairly. Ipinapaubaya po natin sa korte ang paglilitis at pagtingin sa mga ebidensyang ipipresenta ng mga parties,” paliwanag ni Atienza matapos dumalo sa unang pagdinig ng kaso.
Binigyang diin pa ni Atty. Atienza na ipinauubaya na nila sa korte ang lahat kaysa sa sumagot sa mga pasaring sa social media.
”We will not engage in speculative assertion especially those posted in social media. We respect the court process and we trust that the court will view this matter fairly. And ipinapaubaya po natin sa korte yung paglilitis at pagtingin sa mga ebidensyang ipipresenta ng mga parties.?”
Pinayuhan din ni Atty. Atienza hindi lamang ang PGMN kungdi ang publiko na ipaubaya sa korte ang paglilitis at huwag ng pag-usapan ang merito ng kaso dahil ito ay nakasampa na sa korte.
“And we encourage the public to be more circumspect, to be able to judge what we see on social media. Because ultimately it is the court that will decide. That goes for all, as lawyers and parties to the case, we are all enjoined and instructed then not to talk about the merits of the case before the media and social media.
Kinumpirma rin niya na hindi nakadalo nang personal si Romualdez sa pagdinig ngunit handa itong sumunod sa anumang legal na proseso ng korte kung kakailanganin.
“Si Speaker, hindi siya nakadalo ngayon dito sa hearing but he’s duly represented by counsel. If magkaroon, or if ma require yung kanyang presence or participation in the case whether by the court or under the rules, he will comply,” pahayag ni Atienza.
