Kinumpirma ng abogadong si Nicholas Kaufman na ipinakilala na kay dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang kaniyang bagong legal counsel kaugnay ng kinahaharap nitong kaso sa International Criminal Court (ICC).
Sinabi ni Kaufman na naganap ang pagpupulong noong Sabado, Mayo 9, matapos hilingin ng Registry of the Court ang kaniyang pahintulot para sa acquaintance visit ng kapalit na counsel ni Duterte.
“On Friday, the Registry of the Court requested my approval for the acquaintance visit of replacement counsel yesterday and in accordance with my professional and ethical obligations, I raised no objection,” ayon kay Kaufman.
Ayon pa sa abogado, mismong ang anak ni Duterte na si Kitty at ina niyang si Honeylet Avanceña umano ang pumili ng bagong legal counsel ng dating pangulo.
“Veronica informed me that she and her mother Honeylet had selected new counsel for PRRD and advised me to step down based on their assurance that they had agreed terms of engagement with replacement counsel who was willing to assume immediate representation. After I confirmed the same with the replacement counsel, I sought the former President’s permission to withdraw,” dagdag niya.
Matatandaang noong Biyernes, Mayo 8 nang kinumpirma ng ICC ang pag-withdraw ni Kaufman bilang legal counsel ni dating Pangulong Duterte na nahararap sa kasong crimes against humanity bunsod ng kaniyang madugong kampanya kontra droga.
“In light of the aforementioned, in accordance with Regulation 78(1) of the Regulations of the Court, I hereby respectfully request leave to withdraw as counsel for Mr. Rodrigo Roa Duterte in the case of the Prosecutor v. Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” saad ni Kaufman sa isinumite niyang dokumento sa ICC.
Ayon naman sa isinumiteng dokumento ni Jacobs sa ICC na nakapetsa rin noong Mayo 8, mababasang pormal siyang humiling sa ICC sa pag-alis niya bilang Associate Counsel ni FPRRD.
Sa ngayon, hindi pa inilalantad ng kampo ni Duterte ang pagkakakilanlan ng bagong abogado na hahawak sa kaniyang depensa.
